The Gloves are off
04.08.2008This week we've been frustrated. We moaned at boyfriends, snapped at colleagues and glared (ok shouted) at people in the supermarket. So, it seems like the perfect week to try a bit of boxing and where better to do it than at a gym with its very own boxing ring bang in the middle.
Gymbox in Holborn was the first of the quickly growing chain of gyms with an emphasis on combat-style workouts.
But don't think for a minute that gymboxing is some poncy boxercise style class filled with girls punching nothing. This one comes complete with boxing gloves and men with really big arms.
Admittedly the first time you enter the ring which is mostly filled with men and just one or two girls you may just want to jump back out but the class which has a mixture of levels from complete beginner to pretty advanced somehow manages to have something for everyone.
Pairing up with someone of a similar level we take turns as the hitter and the person holding the pads. We mix jabs with crosses and uppercuts while the instructor walks around perfecting our technique or encouraging those with an already perfected technique to hit harder and faster and vary it up a little.
While we're not punching we're being made to do sit ups and press ups and then told to punch some more. With every whack of your partner's pads the frustration dissipates and a healthier release than the moaning, snapping, glaring and shouting makes for a seriously good hour of training.
Much more fun than running on a treadmill going nowhere, this class will have you sweating, working your whole body and toning those arms. Most importantly it's a great excuse to release frustration after a tough day by punching things, which lets be honest, we all need to do sometimes.
