Additionally, Chateau d’Amboise is architecturally extraordinary but one doesn’t need a tour of this chateau to appreciate its beauty. Most of its treasures were stolen in the French Revolution, thus a walk around the chateau is sufficient. The most visited chateau of the Loire Valley, Chenonceau lies just 15 minutes outside of Amboise. Originally constructed in the 11th century, extensive gardens were added by Diane de Poitiers, the chateau’s inhabitant and the mistress of Henry II, in the 16th century. The chateau stretches across the River Cher. It was Catherine de Medici’s favorite residence after she had Diane de Poitiers expelled upon her husband, Henry II’s death. It also became a hospital during the Second World War. The chateau is beautiful as are the gardens that surround it.

If you do not wish to admire the historic merits of Amboise, there are certainly enough culinary attractions for one to explore. In addition to many local wineries, the cheese manufactured in the Loire Valley is exceptional. Visit La Cave in Amboise. This little shop is inside Chateau d’Amboise but can be accessed through the town square. In it, you can find a selection of cheeses and wines from Amboise or elsewhere in the Loire Valley. There are no tables inside the restaurant but just as enjoyable, one can sit on the wall or on the grass outside the chateau. For dinner, don’t miss L’Alliance and L’Epicerie. Both restaurants are extremely impressive for a town of Amboise’s size. Whether you go for the wine, the history or just to relax, a weekend in Amboise makes for an affordable and elegant romantic getaway.
