The smokey eye is one of the most popular ways to vamp up your make-up. While the look can turn you into a smouldering seductress it can also leave you looking like you haven't slept for a month. So, to get the look just right we've enlisted the help of MAC Senior Artist Neil Young.

"To achieve the perfect Smokey eye you need a little time and a good brush.

Start by taking a pencil in the same colour as your eye shadow and line all around the eye, soften the hardness of the pencil with a small brush such as MAC #219.

The pencil should look perfectly blended before moving to the shadow. Take the shadow and sweep over the pencil and blend all around the eye ensuring there are no hard edges, this will give the eye a larger feel and prevent the eyes looking small.

Remember Smokey is a technique not a colour and can be done in any palette. For some the pencil may be enough, although the shadow adds intensity and softness to the eye."
