Luxury in London
16.09.2008A stone's throw from the Natural History Museum, the home of London Fashion Week, The Gore Hotel oozes the style of the event with a classic feel and a modern edge. The boutique hotel's unassuming front hides a wealth of wonders inside which, for visitors from abroad, epitomizes British culture perfectly. So with London Fashion Week calling again we popped down to The Gore for a little luxury...
The first time you stay in a luxury hotel the usual big airy room, squishy bed and pristine décor is impressive. After staying in many, it becomes pleasant but the impact is diminished. Having stayed in several then what will astound the discerning traveller is that the rooms at the Gore are breathtakingly impressive.
Walking into the Tudor room, for example, my eyes widened and I spent most of my time admiring the intricate detail. The palatial room feels like it belongs in a museum and you cannot help but feel absolutely regal in that carved four poster bed.
Stained glass windows hide behind thick, heavy curtains while the high ceiling with wooden beams give the room the kind of space you wouldn't expect in a central London hotel.
The centrepiece is a giant fire place in front of vintage furniture which feels like it should have 'please do not sit' written on it. We do, of course, while picking up one of the old classic books which sits on the shelf.
All the hotel's deluxe rooms have features which make them all incredibly luxurious but entirely unique such as the Dame Nellie Melba room and the Judy Garland room named after and designed in the style of the famous ladies that stayed in those rooms.
Now, while escaping the 21st century for a touch of the 16th may sound ideal for a little while there are few people who can't go without their technology for longer than, well, an hour.
So, hidden against the dark wood walls is a plasma TV; alongside an antique looking vase is an ipod dock, while a laptop will sit happily on the antique desk connected to the wireless network included in the package.
