Freak Show
01.10.2008With stunning collections from Christian Dior, Balmain and Vivienne Westwood at this season's Paris Fashion Week it would be easy for designers to get swept under the carpet.
Not so for Martin Margiela who has created one of the most memorable shows of not only Paris Fashion Week but the whole international fashion week circuit. Margiela celebrated his twentieth anniversary with a show that was not only impressive but seriously creepy.
The show saw an eerie stadium-sized space transformed into the catwalk while models walked - in straight unfaltering lines to boot - while their faces were smothered in nude or black nylon in a horror-film style show reminiscent of Hollow Man, Silence of the Lambs and, on occasion, cousin 'It' from The Addams Family
Last year, Margiela'a show featured blindfolded models and this season's took it to the next level as the models walked blind or were pushed along like mannequins.
Margiela is notorious for his lack of interviews and remaining anonymous in any way he can and this show epitomised that anonymity he strives for in his designs.
But at the end of the show, it wasn't the clothes that stayed in our mind but a feeling that we'd just experienced the most thrillingly disturbing show of the season.
