Elbow win Mercury Prize

Beating out Estelle and Adele

A bit of Elbow grease...

10.09.2008

Indie band Elbow have beaten out stiff competition from Radiohead, Estelle, Adele, The Last Shadow Puppets and Robert Plant to win the Mercury Music Prize.

The top prize of £20,000 was awarded to Elbow for their latest album The Seldom Seen Kid and bagging the coveted prize will also be certain to increase album sales.

Losers Radiohead looked on as the Mancunians took home the prize. Radiohead have now been nominated a record four times without winning the award.

The Mercury Music Prize has a reputation for awarding the prize to outside chances rather than favourites, notably so in 2004 when the prize went to little-known Anthony and the Johnsons.

Elbow have been making music for 18 years during which they have released four studio albums, four EPs and ten top fifty singles in the UK.
